 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija'peres; April 16, 1971 until March 31, 1995) popularly referred to as Selena was an American Tejano singer. Her contribution to fashion and music have made her the "Queen" of Tejano music. Selena is among the most well-known performers from the Mexican-American genre of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third place in 2020 on their "Greatest Latino Artists List of All Time", which was built on Latin music and Latin albums. Some media outlets described her as the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices. She is also regarded as one of the most influential Latin artists of all time , and is widely credited with propelling the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest child of the Quintanilla family, she debuted in the music industry as part of the group Selena y Los Dinos, which also included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. The singer was frequently criticized during the 1980s and she was refused bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, which is a largely male-dominated genre. After winning the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained popularity. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and made her debut album with her own name in the same year. During that time, her brother became her primary music producer and songwriter.Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) that peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. Its commercial success led music critics to call it the "breakthrough" record of her musical career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was a huge hit and became her signature tune. Live! (1993) was nominated for Best Mexican/American Album at 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano album to be awarded this prize. Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It was one of America's most popular Latin albums. It was also credited with launching Tejano music's very first commercial phase. It became one of Latin music's most popular subgenres.
